Reclaiming the historic name of Volodymyr was more than just a bureaucratic change. It was a pivotal moment where the city shed its Soviet-imposed suffix to assert its sovereign identity. The Agency for Territorial Initiatives (ATI) spearheaded this transformation through strategy, high-stakes communication, and visual branding.
The Challenge: Erasing the Imperial Suffix
For decades, the city was forced to use the suffix "-Volynskyi," a remnant of the Russian Empire's attempt to distinguish it from Russia’s Vladimir-on-Klyazma. In 2021, the community decided it was time to reclaim its original name. ATI’s Mission: To manage public perception, navigate legal hurdles, and design a brand that reflects the grandeur of one of Ukraine’s oldest princely capitals.
The Strategy: Volodymyr as a Sovereign Identity
We framed the renaming process as the core of a broader branding effort. Volodymyr is not just a "city in Volyn"—it is a historical center of power and a foundation of Ukrainian statehood.
Key Contributions by ATI:
-
Strategic Communication: Crafting the narrative for public hearings and advocating for the change in the Ukrainian Parliament.
-
Visual Identity: Designing a brand rooted in minimalism and historical symbolism that feels distinctly modern.
-
Urban Integration: Transitioning the new name into the physical city space, from entry signs to municipal documentation.
Results: A Victory in Identity and Law
-
Official Restoration: On December 15, 2021, the Parliament of Ukraine officially restored the name Volodymyr.
-
Community Unity: The branding process turned a potential conflict into a unifying movement, fostering local pride.
-
Investment Readiness: With a concise and powerful name, Volodymyr is now positioned as a key cultural and logistics hub on the EU border.
Volodymyr became the first major Ukrainian city to complete a full decolonization of its name before the 2022 invasion, setting a powerful precedent for the entire nation.
